My preferred method of reading is from cover to cover with short interruptions for food and water. I am not a chapter-a-day kind of person. Or rather, I am not a willing chapter-a-day person. I have small children and usually, to my immense frustration, that is just how it works out. Having a Kindle has greatly improved the situation - Baby Boy can cuddle on my lap, slowly waking up and I can read. When he is older Baby Boy will be a huge coffee drinker but in the meantime he likes 10-15 minutes on Mommy's lap while he adjusts to the waking world.
Baby Boy is almost 3 now (yeah, he really needs a new blog name) and there are no longer numerous stretches of lap time for feeding and he only needs wake-up cuddles twice a day. Luckily, there is this device called a television and with it I am able to achieve some more satisfying stretches of reading - the entire length of Cars, Toy Story or Lady and the Tramp if I am lucky. I try to use this magical device sparingly, but every so often a long awaited book is released or received. Or it is my birthday week. Or I'm watching the kids by myself while Hubby is on a trip with his best buddies. Since all 3 of these things happened last week I felt pretty justified in deploying the television and it's soldiers: PBS, NickJr and DisneyJr.
Alas, my birthday week is over. Hubby is back from his trip. I have two Ilona Andrews ebooks left unread but if I redeploy the soldiers now I will face a severe case of The Guilt. So my bender is over and now I need to be a mature adult and put the books down before my family is forced to stage an intervention. It is back to a half hour a day of much interrupted reading. I'm a pretty fast reader so that should be at least a few chapters a day. Self discipline, I hate you.

a new year update
The holidays
It was great seeing everyone for Christmas, being in old familiar places, and seeing sunshine and blue skies again. The price of all this was a whole lot of driving thanks to our airport shutting down all flights. Little Guy handled all the car time (14-15 hrs each way) better than I would have ever dreamed but the drive home was really, really rough. Portable DVD players are worth their weight in gold. And in the most desperate of times, in the darkest of hours, mini chocolate donuts can really make a toddler a much happier person.
The pregnancy
As recently as our drive home I was puking on the side of the road in the freezing cold (needed to stay awake so no nausea meds) but I am doing much better now. I've been off nausea meds for 5 days now and I think I'm going to make it this time. I'm a lot more energetic in my waking hours without the meds, thats for sure. Sleeping is getting rougher and I miss being able to lay on my back. A lot. But I'm managing!
The baby
We had some ultrasound findings that while statistically are probably nothing, still have to be checked out so we will be visiting a perinatologist in a few weeks. In the meantime I'm trying not to worry and to be reassured by the stats. Also we're trying to agree on a name for BabyTwo. I feel we're not far off, but who knows? He's been kicking a lot and hubby finally got to catch some good ones the other day.
The big brother
He really enjoyed seeing everyone at Christmas, too. He remembered exactly where his grandparents kept all the good stuff thats the most fun to get into. He's been especially clingy with me lately. On the one hand it's very sweet and warms my heart. On the other hand I want to foster more independence now so it doesn't sting so much when the baby comes. I love my cuddle time with him and don't want to lose it, but he simply will not be able to sit on my lap or be held all the time once BabyTwo arrives.
The Hubby
He recently found 2 of his 3 tackle boxes that have been missing since the move. His dad also sent him home with a zodiac boat and is currently repairing a motor for it. Now if his favorite fishing spot would open back up he'd be set!

bygones
Today I ran across Evil in webspace. Not the concept of evil, but an actual person I call Evil. Evil was once a close friend of mine and has another name, of course. I'm not going to rehash or trash here; suffice it to say I think very little of Evil as a person. I don't wish Evil harm, and I do not in fact believe she is evil. I do think she is....a lot of other words I won't use in an effort to keep my pledge to not trash her.
Bottom line:
Glad not to have seen or heard from Evil in 6 years.
Annoyed to have the streak broken today.

today...
the good: I got to sleep in this AM.
the bad: I went to sleep last night thinking that since the ants were gone I needed to clean the rest of the ant poison off the floors today. I woke up this morning to find a fresh new trail of ants dining at Poison Lake. Technically I guess this is good too since they're unwittedly killing themselves.
the ugly: see above.
bonus good: Things are looking up for ScienceMama.

Ants Marching (to thier death)
Right now in my entryway there is a trail of ants greedily drinking from a pool of poisonous bait. Turns out the secret to getting them to take the bait is to accidentally kick the stupid trap so that the liquid spills out all over the tile. I may patent this trap kicking process its worked so well...
